Green Burial: No Embalming, No Metal Caskets, No Vaults.
From Today's Chicago Tribune:
What happened 30 years ago with the rise in cremation could eventually happen with green burials," said Joe Sehee, executive director of the Green Burial Council. "People like the idea of their burial being part of a national conservation strategy. ... They want their last act to be meaningful, something that heals the land and the soul and connects them to something bigger and longer-lasting than a coffin or an insurance policy."
Funeral directors cite problems
But green burials also have downsides, mainstream funeral directors contend. They say that makeup application, often used to make the deceased look better after long illnesses, is difficult without embalming. They worry that doing viewings quickly -- usually within 24 to 48 hours to beat any decomposition -- is sometimes too fast for grieving families. They say that digging graves in some parts of the country can be next to impossible for weeks on end in winter, but that unembalmed bodies should not be kept unburied for that long. And they assert that embalming cuts down on the risk, however small, of disease transmission from buried corpses.

Forest Lawn Memorial Park is the original location of Forest Lawn, a chain of cemeteries in Southern California.
Forest Lawn was founded in 1906. Dr. Hubert Eaton took over the management of the cemetery in 1917 and is credited as being the "founder" of Forest Lawn for his innovations of establishing the "memorial park plan" (eliminating upright cemetery monuments) and being the first to open a funeral home on dedicated cemetery grounds.
Most of its burial plots have evocative names, including Eventide, Babyland (for infants, shaped like a heart), Graceland, Inspiration Slope, Slumberland (for children and adolescents), Sweet Memories, Vesperland, Borderland (on the edge of the cemetery), and Dawn of Tomorrow. Packages for burial cover a wide spectrum of prices: cremation urns, for example, range from those with names like "The Olympus," priced in the tens of thousands of dollars, down to the more lowly "The Plastic Container" and "The Steel Box," each priced less than $100.
The six Forest Lawn cemeteries contain about 1,500 statues, 500 of which are reproductions of famous works of art, in various locations. (Many statues around the cemetery are listed as being available for purchase for use near a tombstone.) Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper has been recreated in stained glass in the Memorial Court of Honor ‘in vibrant, glowing and indestructible colors.’ There are also a number of full-sized reproductions of other Renaissance sculptures, including Michelangelo's David and Moses.
There are three non-sectarian chapels: ‘The Little Church of the Flowers,’ ‘The Wee Kirk o’ the Heather,’ and ‘The Church of the Recessional’. Over 60,000 people have actually been married here (including Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman, and Regis Philbin and his wife, Joy. Over 250,000 people are buried at Forest Lawn; there are over a million visitors each year, including thousands of local schoolchildren on field trips.
Some of the inspiration at Forest Lawn is patriotic rather than pious, such as the Court of Freedom, with its large mosaic of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence [1] and a 13-foot-high statue of George Washington. On display in the "Hall of the Crucifixion" is the panorama painting by the Polish artist Jan Styka entitled "The Crucifixion." It is the largest framed, mounted-to-canvas painting in the world, measuring 195 feet in length by 45 feet in height. The main gates of Forest Lawn - Glendale (above, right) are claimed to be the world's largest wrought-iron gates and are located at 1712 South Glendale Avenue, Glendale, California.
The Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills Cemetery is a second park solely dedicated to the preservation of American history.
Forest Lawn's 300 acres (1.2 km²) of intensely landscaped grounds and thematic sculptures were the inspiration for the biting commentary of Evelyn Waugh's satirical novel The Loved One and Jessica Mitford's acerbic The American Way of Death. Many commentators have considered Forest Lawn to be a unique American creation, and perhaps a uniquely maudlin Los Angeles creation, with its "theme park" approach to death.
Among those interred in the cemetery are a number of important personalities and famous people, including men and women from the entertainment industry and their relatives. Some final resting places, such as those of Humphrey Bogart and Mary Pickford, are secluded in private gated gardens with no public access. A number of tombs are also kept from the public eye. The Court of Honor advertises that in some of the crypts beneath it are spots which no amount of money can buy, but individuals may be "voted in" as "Immortals."

Cremations Reach 50% in California; Funeral Homes Suffer
A report in SLATE Magazine today points out that it's a tough time to be in the "Death Care" business, what most people would refer to as the funeral home business.
The death rate has declined over the last few years.
Cremation is increasingly becoming an option. In 2005 50% of all deaths in California resulted in cremation as opposed to a traditional burial.
Sales at funeral industry giants Service Corp International and Batesville Casket Company are barely keeping pace with inflation.
Cremations cost on average $4,000 to $6,000 compared to $8,000 to $10,000 for a traditional funeral, casket and cemetery plot, but it's not just economics driving the trend toward cremations.
There's less stigma attached now than in the past. Religions are mostly dropping their objection to the idea (Jewish tradition being a major hold out). Americans are more mobile and families are more widely dispersed than ever before and that limits the need people feel to be buried in a particular spot. There are very few family burial plots anymore and we are increasingly a nation of people who don't know where they'll be buried... if at all.
And the environmental movement may be the funeral homes biggest enemies. The Green funeral is catching on and many are concerned about taking up space when it could be pt to better use. Eco friendly states such as Hawaii, Washington and California have some of the nations highest cremations rates.

Plan your own funeral and go out with a bang or a bargain
By David Colker,
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
You can't cheat death. So you might as well face it as a smart shopper. Planning a funeral used to fall almost entirely to funeral homes, which guided bereaved loved ones into standardized deals that might have included services or items the dearly departed might not have chosen. But federal and state laws have put the power of choice into the hands of consumers, and more and more people are taking advantage of it by planning their own send-offs, thereby controlling the cost. A poll conducted by Harris Interactive in 2005 found that 47% of people said they were going to plan their own funerals. And businesses -- factory-direct emporiums, online merchants and even Costco -- have responded with products to meet the need. It's not difficult, according to consumer advocates, to design a funeral that can cost a good deal less than the national average of about $6,500. You can even go green with an environmentally friendly exit strategy. So if you choose to go death shopping, the place to start is with your rights under the law.
The Funeral Rule
The bedrock federal consumer law on death matters went into effect in 1984. It's known throughout the industry as the "Funeral Rule."
The law has strong provisions that govern how funeral providers have to deal with consumers:
* If you call a funeral home and ask about prices, the staff has to give them to you, even if you don't disclose your name or telephone number.
* If you visit a funeral home and ask about prices, they must give you a detailed, printed document known as the "general price list." And you can take it home.
* You have the right to buy some items, such as caskets, from outside providers. The funeral home can't add a corkage-type fee when you BYOB (bring your own box).
* Caskets are not required for cremations. A provider who offers cremations must make alternative boxes available.
* Before you buy, all the goods and services you've chosen must be detailed in a written statement that shows the cost of each item. If an item is required because of a law or cemetery requirement, that must be noted.
Now that you know the rules, it's times to plan.
Death wishes
If there's one thing the funeral establishment and consumer advocates can agree upon, it's the value of making a plan that takes into account both your wishes and financial realities.
"It allows a person to make decisions at a time when emotions are not raw," said Shaun Meyers, a funeral director in Ogden, Utah, and a member of the National Funeral Directors Assn. executive board.
Joshua Slocum, executive director of the Funeral Consumers Alliance watchdog group, advised visiting or at least calling several funeral homes to compare. Be wary, he said, of package deals that include the casket, service, flowers and other items.
"They might say something like, 'This is our traditional package,' " Slocum said. "Every time you see that word 'traditional,' cross it out and replace it with 'most profitable.' "
He suggests making your choices a la carte so you can forgo items often included in packages.
For example, no federal or state laws require embalming of a body before burial, although many funeral homes won't allow a viewing without it. Skipping embalming and viewing can save about $800, according to average prices determined in a 2005 National Funeral Directors survey.
But you have to act quickly. If you don't embalm, California law says a funeral home must refrigerate the body after 24 hours, and that can cost about $50 a day.
That's money in your afterlife pocket, or you can put it toward other items. Hollywood Forever Funeral Home, located on the grounds of the cemetery of the same name, has some of the most flamboyant offerings.
